If Dana White is still looking for potential opponents to take on Nate Diaz at UFC 200 on July 9, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada, Neil Magny wants to have a word.
After Conor McGregor was bounced from his rematch against the aforementioned Diaz after failing to fulfill his media obligations, Magny took to Twitter to volunteer his services.
Fast forward a few weeks later, and he is still open to filling the void, as he revealed on The MMA Hour that he is currently training just in case his number is called. And should he get the chance to face a slugger like Diaz, he promises a bangfest that will rival that of the one Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar staged 11 years ago at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 1 Finale.
His words:
“The opportunity came up when I saw Conor McGregor pull out of the fight. Nate didn’t have an opponent at the time and I just thought it would be a great thing for me. Everyone ranked above me in welterweight division is preoccupied to fight so I thought why not pick a fight against Nate Diaz. It would be a huge opportunity for me to keep relevant. The opportunity to fight at UFC 200 would have been huge and against Nate Diaz, who is coming off an impressive win over McGregor would be huge for my career. I just saw the opportunity and it wasn’t anything personal against Nate Diaz, it was just the chance to fight him at UFC 200. That is a fight that would be great for the fans, as well. I don’t think he or I would hold back in that fight. It would just be an all out war where the fans get a fight they can really appreciate. And it might be along the lines of the fight between Stephan Bonnar and Forrest Griffin. I’m sure we would both leave it all in that Octagon and just go to war. I don’t see anything bad coming out of that fight.”
Diaz, however, is currently on vacation — and training with Jean-Claude Van Damme — as he was only interested in proving to the world that his first win over “Notorious” was far from a fluke.
If Magny — who was last seen beating the brakes off Hector Lombard at UFC Fight Night 85 (see it) — doesn’t get the Diaz fight, he’s open to fighting at UFC on FOX 20 on July 23, 2016 in Chicago. He also wouldn’t mind getting a coveted spot at UFC 205 in New York this November.
And since Magny has always been a company man, it’s time the promotion does him a solid and allows him to fight in front of his hometown crowd at Madison Square Garden.
